My name is Tanusree Dasgupta. I’m a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC), registered and licensed member of the ICCRC (Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council) in good standing and a proud member of Canadian Association of Professional Immigration Consultants (CAPIC). I hold a Diploma in Immigration Consultant from Academy of Learning Mississauga, Ontario, as well as Master of Arts with specialization in Logic from Jadavpur University.

Immigration has been an important part of building Canada into what it is today: a country that celebrates multiculturalism and diversity, has a global reputation for welcoming people from around the world, and standing up for the most vulnerable. Waves of immigrants and their descendants have contributed their talents and hard work to Canada’s success. Immigration is a defining feature of Canada: immigrants (meaning people born outside of Canada) currently represent one in five people in Canada. Over six million new immigrants have arrived in Canada since 1990. Last year, Canada accepted some 300,000 immigrants, an increase from the roughly 250,000 accepted per year on average during the previous decade. That number is expected to rise even further to 350,000 people per year by 2021.

Who can I hire to help me with my application for a visa?
You can hire a representative or an agent to help with your application. The representative or agent must be either:
- an immigration consultant who is a member in good standing of the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council or
- a lawyer or paralegal who is a member in good standing of a Canadian provincial or territorial law society, or
- a notary who is a member in good standing of the Chambre des notaires du Québec
Do I need a visa to visit Canada?
Most travellers need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to, or transit through, a Canadian airport. What you need depends on:
- the type of travel document you will travel with.
- the country that issued your travel document.
- your nationality; and
- how you will travel to Canada.
If you do not have the proper documents, such as an eTA or visa, you may be delayed or prevented from boarding your flight to Canada.
Do I need to apply for both a visitor visa and an eTA?
No. If you plan to travel to Canada, you need a valid visitor visa OR a valid eTA. The one you need depends on:
- the type of travel document you will travel with.
- the country that issued your travel document.
- your nationality; and
- how you will travel to Canada.
My application for a visitor visa was refused. Should I apply again?
No. If your application was refused, applying again with the same information, will not change this decision.
Do I need a Canadian visa if I have a United States visa?
Yes, most travellers need a visitor visa or an eTA to travel to, or transit through, Canada. What you need depends on:
- the type of travel document you will travel with;
- the country that issued your travel document;
- your nationality; and
- how you will travel to Canada.
How do I get a transit visa?
You can apply for a transit visa by filling out the application for a Temporary Resident Visa and selecting transit visa from the list of options on the form.
You may not need a transit visa if you are travelling to or from the United States. The Transit Without Visa program (TWOV) and the China Transit Program (CTP) allow certain foreign nationals to transit through Canada on their way to and from the United States without a Canadian transit visa, if they meet certain requirements.
If I get sick or have an accident while visiting Canada, will the Government of Canada pay for my medical treatment?
Canada does not pay for hospital or medical services for visitors. You should get health insurance to cover any medical costs before you come to Canada.
How does the parent and grandparent super visa differ from a multiple entry visa?
Currently, most visitors to Canada may visit for up to six months when they first enter Canada. Visitors who wish to stay longer must apply for an extension and pay a new fee.
With the parent and grandparent super visa, eligible parents and grandparents can visit family in Canada for up to two years without the need to renew their status.
The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa that provides multiple entries for a period up to 10 years. The key difference is that the Super Visa allows an individual to stay for up to two years at a time in Canada, while a 10-year multiple entry visa would only have a status period for each entry of six months only.
Is the parent and grandparent super visa a multi-entry visa?
Yes, the super visa is a multi-entry visa. It allows multiple entries for up to 10 years.
Who’s eligible for a parent and grandparent super visa?
To be eligible for a super visa, you must:
- be the parents or grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents and
- meet other eligibility requirements.
Your dependants are not eligible for a super visa. They can still apply to visit Canada for up to 6 months with the right travel document.
What is a business visitor?
A business visitor is someone who comes to Canada:
- for international business activities
- without directly entering the Canadian labour market
Examples of this include someone who comes to Canada to meet people from companies doing business with their country; to observe site visits because a Canadian company invited them for training in product use/sales or other business transaction functions. They don’t need a work permit to come to Canada.
Business visitors must prove that their main source of income and their main place of business are outside Canada.
Does a business visitor need a special visa to enter Canada?
No, business visitors who need a visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) must complete the visitor visa or eTA form. The eTA and visitor visa cover all visitors, including those coming to Canada on business.
I got a multiple-entry temporary resident visa to visit a relative in Canada last year. Can I use it to travel to Canada on a business trip?
Yes, as long as it has not expired.
Why do I need to get a police certificate?
IRCC use police certificates to find out if you have a criminal record. They help immigration officers make sure you are not a security risk to Canada.
What if I can't get a police certificate for my immigration application?
If you’re unable to get a police certificate from a country, you’re responsible to show why you can’t get one. To prove that you can’t get a police certificate, you must:
- show proof that you requested a police certificate from the correct authorities and
- write a letter explaining all the efforts you have taken to get one
- Even if you send the above items, this is not a guarantee of acceptance.
